Librium is a trade name under which the prescription medication chlordiazepoxide is sold. Chlordiazepoxide is notable as it was the first benzodiazepine to be synthesized. Librium and other benzodiazepines were met with approval and wide usage for some time after they were introduced to the market, but later they would be called into question over safety and regulatory issues, with many demanding that more restrictions be in place for their prescription and use.

Librium has many different properties including amnestic, anxiolytic, hypnotic, and skeletal muscle relaxant. It is a drug that is well known and has been used by many because it has been around since the 1950’s. In fact, in 1959 the medication was used by more than 2,000 doctors and 20,000 patients. Patients who were treated with Chlordiazepoxide were often being treated for chronic alcoholism, pyschosis, and neurosis. Additionally, patients were treated with the medication for anxiety, tension, and excitement. Most reported that the issues that indicated the use of the medication were effectively reduced when taking it.

As is the case with all medications on the market today, Chlordiazepoxide is associated with some side effects. These side effects may include constipation, drowsiness, fainting, change in sex drive, liver problems, lack of muscle coordination, irregular menstrual cycles, and nausea. Other side effects may include skin rashes, swelling, yellow eyes, and yellow skin. Not all patients will experience side effects, but those who do will not know whether side effects will be a problem until they begin taking the medication. In all cases side effects ceased when the medication was stopped.
